Trump claims progress as Israel, Iran trade heaviest strikes in months

Key Factors

Iran Peace Deal Analysis for June 9, 2026

Israel and Iran exchanged missile and drone fire over the weekend and into Tuesday. The fighting was the worst since the war began. Trump insists negotiations are moving forward and claims the situation is going well, yet neither side showed restraint.

Trump has hardened his position on frozen Iranian assets. He will not unfreeze them before a deal is signed. He also demanded Iran accept terms on uranium enrichment and control of the Strait of Hormuz. These issues have deadlocked talks for weeks.

Trump's rhetoric contradicts itself. He calls the conflict a "military exercise" and says Israel will not return to war with Iran. At the same time, he vows "total victory" within weeks and insists "we have all the power." His top diplomat Vance said last week that a deal was "very close" but "not there yet." As of Monday, Iran accused the US of seeking no ceasefire or dialogue. Tehran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz completely if talks collapse.

The core problem has not moved. Iran demands sanctions relief and a guarantee against future US strikes before it stops military operations. Trump demands Iran dismantle uranium enrichment and reopen shipping lanes first. With fighting now at its worst level, the cost of backing down has risen for both sides. Trump's claim that talks are progressing does not match the missiles flying overhead and neither side moving on the core sticking points.
